WEALTH IN LIFE; GIVE | Barbara Friedberg Personal Finance

CHARITY AND WEALTH BUILDING

Barbara Walters just pledged $250,000 for Hurricane Sandy disaster relief, George Stephanopolis promised $50,000. These public contributions are inspiring and motivating. And it?s great to give during times of disaster. I will contribute today to the red cross as well. But, don?t forget about others during the rest of the year.

abc day of giving red cross

BUILD WEALTH THROUGH GIVING

Don?t let disasters be the only time you give.

Get Inspired by Hurricane Sandy to Give

I hesitate to write about charity at the risk of sounding ?preachy.? Which is kind of silly, since this entire website is devoted to motivating others to improve their lives through financial and personal wealth building.

CHARITY CONTRIBUTES TO WEALTH

I don?t know if giving leads to financial wealth or not. Although some folks say they?ve experienced abundance and a wealthy life when giving to others. I know the personal rewards of sharing one?s good fortune with others. Life is more than dollars and cents. In fact, consider your most wonderful memories and attach a dollar value to them; the birth of a child, the relationship with your spouse, the fun of playing with a dog, a walk through the snow, or an evening of trick or treating. Every one of those events is free!!!

A natural disasters can focus your priorities on what is important. Now is a good time to evaluate.

Financial wealth building is important, but so is giving to others, family relationships, and friends.

Give to others for your own benefit and the benefit of the global community. I recommend Charity Navigator to help wade through the mass of pleas for assistance. I automate my giving through their site as well.

What are your personal beliefs towards giving and charity? Does a natural disaster move you to action?

DOHA, Qatar (AP) ? A former Syrian air force general who was also the country's first astronaut said Tuesday that only about one-third of Syria's fighter pilots are carrying out the daily bombing raids of rebel strongholds because President Bashar Assad's regime cannot count on the loyalty of the rest.

Maj. Gen. Mohammed Fares, who defected in August and joined the main umbrella group for regime opponents, the Syrian National Council, also said the regime's combat aircraft are aging and running short of spare parts, but that Assad still has hundreds of planes at his disposal.

"He (Assad) can still continue bombing," the 61-year-old Fares said on the sidelines of a SNC conference in the Qatari capital, Doha.

Syria's civil war has been locked in a stalemate in recent months. Rebels have seized territory in heavy fighting, particularly in rural areas in northern Syria. The regime, with its ground forces stretched thin, has struck back with air raids to try to dislodge the opposition fighters. Government pilots have also bombed civilian areas in seemingly random attacks, devastating entire neighborhoods and terrorizing the population.

Syria's opposition has pleaded with its international backers for anti-aircraft missiles to defeat Assad, but the rebels' foreign backers are concerned such weapons could fall into the hands of Islamic militants fighting on the rebel side.

In recent months, the regime has increasingly used makeshift bombs consisting of hundreds of kilos of explosives stuffed into barrels. Fares said the inaccurate barrel bombs are meant to terrify the population, but are also being used because the regime is running out of ordinary bombs.

He reiterated the opposition mantra that the rebels could defeat Assad's air force if given the necessary weapons, particularly to bring down planes and helicopters.

He said only about 30 percent of Syria's pilots, or between 100 and 120, are involved in the bombing raids. The regime does not want to put the loyalty of the others to the test, and wants to prevent defections of pilots, he added.

Pilots and their families usually live in military compounds, and this gives the regime leverage over pilots toying with the idea of defecting with their planes, said Fares, adding that he last served as a senior administrator in the air force.

It was not possible to verify Fares' statements, but Omar Lamrani, a military analyst at the Texas-based think tank Stratfor, said it was plausible for the regime to ground pilots considered less-than-loyal to prevent defections.

Lamrani also said the regime is believed to have about 400 fixed-wing aircraft and 200 helicopters, but that many are old and not well-maintained. The use of barrel bombs could suggest stockpiles of regular bombs are running low or that the regime is keeping some weapons for a later stage in the conflict.

Fares said he sneaked across the Turkish border with his family after fleeing Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a key battleground. Since Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011, there have been a number of high-level defections, including of a former prime minister, but not to the extent that they have dramatically threatened the regime.

Fares said trained as an astronaut in the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1987, and spent eight days on Russia's Mir space station, before returning to Syria. He said he was an early sympathizer of the uprising against Assad and fed information to the opposition, but that it was difficult to defect because he was being watched by Syrian intelligence.

The ex-astronaut attended the SNC conference as a new member of the group's expanded general assembly.

The SNC, formed a year ago and consisting largely of long-time exiles and academics, has been trying to broaden its base to deflect criticism that it's out of touch with those fighting on the ground to oust Assad. On Monday, the SNC voted to nearly double its general assembly to some 400 people, including activists from Syria or those who fled only recently.

On Wednesday, the group is choosing a new leadership. However, the internal reforms may not be enough to thwart attempts to form a new opposition leadership that would dilute the SNC's influence.

The U.S. has become increasingly frustrated with the SNC's failure to forge a cohesive and more representative leadership. Last week, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton harshly criticized the group.

Syrian dissident Riad Seif has proposed a 50-member leadership team with wide representation of those inside Syria and only 15 seats for the SNC. Seif said Tuesday that the SNC has "failed" because it has not provided leadership and support for those fighting the regime.

The fate of Seif's plan is to be discussed Thursday, but the SNC has been pushing back because it fears it could be sidelined. In a counter proposal, the SNC said those present Thursday should set up a transition government, not argue about leadership posts.

The outgoing SNC chief, Abdelbaset Sieda, warned Tuesday that "any action targeting the council (SNC) will intentionally or unintentionally prolong the life of the regime."

He did not refer specifically to Seif's plan, but said that "we emphasize the need to preserve the SNC as a basic component" of the Syrian opposition.

Study finds diabetes raises levels of proteins linked to Alzheimer's features

Saturday, October 27, 2012

Growing evidence suggests that there may be a link between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease, but the physiological mechanisms by which diabetes impacts brain function and cognition are not fully understood. In a new study published in Aging Cell, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies show, for the first time, that diabetes enhances the development of aging features that may underlie early pathological events in Alzheimer's.

Specifically, the Salk team found increases in two hallmarks of Alzheimer's-accumulations of amyloid beta (Abeta) and tau protein-in the brains of diabetic mice, especially in cells surrounding blood vessels. Abeta, the misfolded peptide that is thought in part to cause Alzheimer's disease, aggregated inside astrocytes, star-shaped brain cells that, upon interaction with Abeta, release inflammatory molecules that can destroy neurons. Previously, this had not been shown in mouse models of type 1 diabetes (T1D).

"Our study supports and extends the links between diabetes, aging and Alzheimer's," says senior author Pamela Maher, a senior staff scientist in Salk's Laboratory of Cellular Neurobiology. "We show that type 1 diabetes increases vascular-associated amyloid beta buildup in the brain and causes accelerated brain aging."

The findings suggest that the neurovascular system may be a good candidate for new therapeutic targets to treat Alzheimer's in the early stages of the disease.

Alzheimer's and diabetes are two diseases that are increasing at an alarming rate within the U.S. population. Alzheimer's affects one in 10 Americans over 65 years of age and nearly 50 percent of those over 85. Similarly, more than 8 percent of Americans (approximately 26 million people) have diabetes, with the vast majority of those individuals being over 60.

Maher says her team is uncertain of the precise mechanism behind the increase in Abeta and tau in the mouse brain, but their data suggest that changes in astrocytes, as well as other pro-inflammatory processes and the bonding of proteins with sugar molecules (called non-enzymatic glycation), may contribute.

"Astrocytes play a key role in maintaining nerve cells in the brain," says lead study author Antonio Currais, a postdoctoral researcher at Salk. "Both chronic peripheral inflammation and increased non-enzymatic glycation are associated with diabetes, and these changes may act on the brain to alter astrocyte function, which eventually leads to Alzheimer's-like changes."

All nerve cells are closely connected to blood vessels, as they need nutrients---- especially glucose (sugar) and oxygen---- provided by the blood in order to function. Astrocytes facilitate the transfer of nutrients between blood vessels and cells. The buildup of Abeta at sites where astrocytes interact with blood vessels suggest that this could impair the transfer of nutrients. The type of Abeta localization seen in Maher's mouse models is also found in human Alzheimer's patients

To examine the contributions of diabetes to Alzheimer's-related pathology in the aged brain, the Salk researchers induced T1D in two sets of mouse models. One set, known as SAMP8 mice, undergo accelerated aging and develop early deterioration in learning and memory, as well as a number of brain alterations similar to those found in Alzheimer's. The other set, SAMR1 mice, which in this study came from the same gene pool as the SAMP8 mice, age normally.

Using these mice, Maher and her colleagues addressed how T1D interacts with age to contribute to Alzheimer's-related pathology. They showed that T1D elicits a wide range of pathological changes in the brains of both strains of mice, which are exacerbated by premature aging.

The Salk study is the first to show that these modifications are similar to those seen in old nondiabetic SAMP8 mice and to identify unique pathological changes, such as increases in markers for inflammation, in aged, T1D SAMP8 mice. Unlike most mouse studies of Alzheimer's, Maher's mice were not engineered to produce high levels of human Abeta or tau,so all of their observations came from naturally occurringAbeta and tau.

Ads Featuring Overweight Children Stop ?Sugarcoating? Childhood ...

From Coral Springs Talk?..

Obesity ads in Georgia are making people a little touchy, especially because they involve in-your-face ads featuring overweight children with messages resembling of ?The Truth? anti smoking campaign.

The campaign, called Strong4Life, by Children?s Healthcare of Atlanta was created in 2011 and urges Georgia residents to ?stop sugarcoating? the childhood obesity crisis. State health officials created the campaign after a survey revealed that 75 percent of parents in Georgia who have an overweight or obese child do not think it?s a problem. Since the state has the second worse childhood obesity rate in the country with nearly 40 percent of all children overweight or obese, officials decided to create the campaign.

Critics have accused Children?s Healthcare of humiliating kids and their parents, the same parents who watched as their children?s weight ballooned.

Linda Matzigkeit, senior vice president at Children?s Healthcare who leads the wellness projects told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that 85 percent of people who have seen the ads view them positively.

?We have to do something about this or our state is in jeopardy. It?s not good for business if your state has the second highest obesity rate. Obese children turn into obese adults.?

Gautam Gambhir rues KKR?s poor batting performance ? Cricket News Update

Kolkata Knight Riders? skipper Gautam Gambhir expressed his disappointment with his side?s poor batting performance in their first Champions League Twenty20 match at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on October 13, which saw them losing to the Delhi Daredevils by a margin of 52 runs.

?We played every badly and it was an embarrassing batting performance from us,? he said after the conclusion of the match. ?But it is long way to go. We have the talent and we will come back into the tournament.

?... these things happen,? he continued. ?Sometimes you can't hold on to the momentum. It was a good wicket. One of us had to bat through. If one of our top four got 70, we would have won.?

The KKR, champions of this year?s edition of the Indian Premier League, faced off against the Delhi Daredevils, who came third in the same tournament. The team won the toss and elected to field first, with the bowlers ? among them Sunil Narine (4-0-21-3) and Lakshmipathy Balaji (4-0-61-2) ? putting forth a lukewarm performance, which saw the Daredevils posting a final target of 160 by the end of 20 overs.

While the target appeared more than achievable, however, the KKR crashed spectacularly when they stepped up to the crease for their turn at bat.? The Daredevils? Irfan Pathan (4-0-19-2), Morne Morkel (4-1-25-2), and Umesh Yadav (4-0-13-2) went on a rampage, completely demolishing the Knight Riders? top order.

?Credit to Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel, and all Delhi fast bowlers. They bowled really well,? Gambhir admitted after the match.

Pathan swept both KKR openers ? wicketkeeper batsman Manvinder Bisla (1) and skipper Gambhir (0) ? off the crease in the very first over, and Morkel followed up with the wicket of veteran batsman Brendon McCullum (0) in the very next over. Jacques Kallis retired hurt on duck, and that took care of the Knight Riders? top order.

Manoj Tiwary top-scored for the team with 33, but the remainder of the batting order failed to make any significant efforts, and the KKR collapsed at 108, with 7 wickets down, by the end of 20 overs.

NextGuide iPad app continues its fight against boring grids, adds Amazon, gestures and more

There's more than a few apps (and even DVRs) that promise to help you find something to watch, but one of the more interesting efforts came from Dijit Media's NextGuide app for the iPad. It launched its assault on the old grid-style layout last month, and an update rolling out is adding listings for more content from Amazon VOD and Prime streaming, plus support for new gestures like two finger swipe between show cards, pinch to hide and more. The "Your Picks" algorithms that attempt to figure out what else you may like before you do have been tweaked, and it can also pull up more information about any show or movie with saved searches and Wikipedia bio lookups. Hit iTunes to give the free app a shot, and see if this is a push in the right direction for your TV watching experience.

Soccer-Scheduling issues irk Asian sides fighting on two fronts

SINGAPORE, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Jordan coach Adnan Hamad has

bemoaned scheduling conflicts as his attempts to steer the side

through to a first World Cup finals were complicated by having

to also negotiate an Asian Cup qualifying campaign.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) conducted the draw

for the 2015 Asian Cup qualifiers in Australia on Tuesday and

Jordan were one of seven teams involved that are also still in

contention for a place at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

Japan and South Korea avoided Asian Cup qualifying courtesy

of being in the top-three finishers at the last Asian Cup, along

with runners-up Australia, who will host the 2015 tournament.

But Jordan, Qatar, Oman, Iran, Lebanon, Uzbekistan and Iraq

will all be required to handle overlapping campaigns.

The Asian Cup matches will begin in February and run through

to March 2014 with the top two sides from each group advancing

to the finals. The World Cup qualifiers are ongoing with the

final match date scheduled for June 18 next year.

Jordan currently hold one of the top-two automatic

qualifying berths for Brazil after their shock 2-1 home win over

Australia in Group B last month and travel to face bottom-placed

Oman next week.

In the regional qualifiers, Jordan were drawn with Syria,

Singapore and Oman but Hamad was only concentrating on the

fourth round World Cup clash in Muscat.

"We have a very good to chance to reach the (Asian Cup)

finals, but there is a problem as some of the matches are going

to be played at the same period with the World Cup qualifiers,"

Hamad told the Asian Football Confederation.

"We must focus now on the upcoming two matches in the World

Cup qualifiers, then we will start thinking about the Asian Cup

qualifications. We must give it (the World Cup qualifications)

full attention as we want to reach the finals."

Qatar were drawn alongside Bahrain, Yemen and Malaysia in

Group D of Asian qualifying but their Brazilian coach Paulo

Autuori shared Hamad's view of only thinking about next

Tuesday's World Cup clash.

Qatar are currently third in their five-team World Cup group

behind South Korea (seven points) but level on four points with

Iran and Lebanon with the Uzbeks two points back in last.

"We only think about the match with Uzbekistan in World Cup

qualifying now," Autuori told the AFC. "We will start thinking

about the Asian Cup qualifiers after the Uzbekistan match."

Lebanon have enjoyed some rapid progress under German coach

Theo Buckner and are competing in the fourth round of World Cup

qualifiers for the first time.

Expected to be the whipping boys of Group A, Lebanon stunned

Iran 1-0 last month and Buckner talked up his side's chances of

reaching the Asian Cup finals after being drawn alongside

Thailand, Kuwait and Iran, again.

"We must work very hard to keep the same level we reached

with the national team," Buckner told the AFC.

"Our chances are there to reach the Asian Cup, but we must

prepare the team in a good way to make them capable of playing

the World Cup qualifications and Asian Cup qualifying matches at

the same time."

>> happening in your neck of the woods.

>> and that's your latest weather.

>> all right, al. thanks. we want to bring back nick offerman and his famous mustache. "parks and rec" now in the fifth season. good morning to both.

>> thank you. good morning.

>> we love that show around here. i have to say, are you now at the point you get renewed for the season, there's no trepidation, will we or won't we?

>> i don't know, i think network tv is in a precarious position and we can no longer tell if the numbers from the nielsen ratings are indicative of what's going on because so many of the young smart people are watching it online. and so there's always -- there's always, we never feel really comfortable. we're always really relieved like, whew.

>> now you're in the fifth season, you get a little love interest here with lucy lawlis? wow.

>> tell us about that.

>> what's up with that?

>> it's -- i've never in 20 years of a professional acting such a champion of a lady in front of me. i've played her plumber and her bus driver, but i've never played the guy with her.

>> can a romantic comedy be far behind at this point?

>> gosh, i don't know. that seems like a stretch to me, you never know.

>> i understand your ex-wife tammy 2 back on the scene played by your own wife megan malali, how is that going to work.

>> it's going to be very interesting that tammy 2 is quite a monster and she's gotten wind of ron's new love interest . some havoc will be wreaked.

>> and you and your wife are doing all kinds of projects together.

>> we are. we have so much fun. we get to work on films together. we have one opening on the 12th called "smashed," which is really good. and she has a new band called nancy and beth. and they've been opening for a live show i do. and we have so much fun getting to play together.

>> cool.

>> it's a blessing.

>> play together, stay together.

>> yes, ma'am.

>> i love it.

>> the mustache, megan, and yourself.

>> the mustache gets a little more attention than i do. it's early.

>> we're so happy to see you. thanks for hanging out with us today.

>> thanks for having me.

>> and you can catch "parks and rec" tonight 9:30/8:30 central
