INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Richard Mourdock became one of the tea party's biggest winners of the 2012 primary season when he knocked off veteran Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar in a brutal campaign built on his contention that Lugar was too old, too out of touch and too friendly with Democrats ? a RINO, Republican in name only.
But the movement's biggest RINO hunter is now changing his tune as he tries to woo moderate voters in a tight race that stands as a key test of the tea party's ability to win outside the nation's most conservative states.
Mourdock is matched in the general election against moderate Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly, who is running even in recent polls despite Indiana's Republican tilt. Suddenly, gone is the strident rhetoric in which Mourdock proclaimed that bipartisanship meant Democrats coming over to Republicans' thinking and that winning meant he would "inflict my opinion on someone else." In its place are support for parts of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, pledges to protect Democratic-championed programs like Social Security and Medicare, and even the once-shunned notion of compromise.
Welcome to "Extreme Makeover: Mourdock Edition."
Mourdock's awkward stagger to the center may be a necessary move if the Republicans are to hold a seat that had been a safe bet since Lugar first won it in 1976. The outcome will help determine whether the GOP manages to win control of the Senate, where Democrats now have a narrow four-seat advantage.
Advertising spending from both sides has topped $6 million so far and promises to explode in the final weeks. The candidates and outside groups have already surpassed the $5.6 million spent in Indiana's 2010 Senate battle.
The tea party has won Senate seats in South Carolina, Utah, Kentucky and Florida, but only one so far ? in Wisconsin ? in the more politically diverse Midwest. Mourdock and Texas Republican Ted Cruz represent the ultraconservative movement's best chance for increasing its clout in this election.
Rather than rally true believers, Mourdock is working now to tie himself closely to the state's popular governor, Mitch Daniels, who is a conventional business-executive Republican rather than a party insurgent, while tying Donnelly to Obama, who is expected to lose Indiana in November.
But the image change is a stretch for the 60-year-old former coal company executive, known for his fascination with motorcycles and race cars and for his puritanical criticism of Republicans he considers not conservative enough.
Mourdock, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress three times before becoming state treasurer, won tea party acclaim for an outspoken role in the fight against the auto bailout, for his criticism of Republicans who voted for Obama's Supreme Court appointments and for calling Lugar's relationship with Obama a "bromance." While reliably conservative, Lugar sought common ground with Democrats on foreign policy issues, a stance Mourdock exploited in the primary.
Mourdock now argues he was never just a "tea partyer," but rather a regular Republican with conservative values.
"I've had a traditional base of Republicans out there," Mourdock insisted in an interview. "Are we going to have all those Lugar Republicans coming over? Some have been slower to join us. But, you know, we're getting there."
Speaking with The Associated Press in an extensive interview Thursday, Mourdock said he represents a new bipartisanship, shared by other Republican candidates like Nebraska's Deb Fischer and Ohio's Josh Mandel. The old style of bipartisanship, practiced by Lugar and other Republicans working with congressional Democrats, placed the United States at the edge of the cliff, he said.
"Democrats would say, 'Let's spend $100 billion we don't have.' Republicans would say 'Oh, no. Let's spend $50 billion we don't have,' and the compromise was, 'Let's spend $75 billion we don't have," he said. "There are a lot of Republicans and a lot of Democrats who have worked together towards that end, and that's where we have reached that point that I think we have to take another path."
Indiana's shift to the right in recent years would seem to benefit Mourdock. The state has defunded Planned Parenthood, approved a right-to-work law that bars employers from requiring union membership and created one of the nation's broadest school voucher programs.
But Indiana voters have a penchant for split tickets and many are more accustomed to the buttoned-down Midwestern style of Republicanism evinced by the reserved Lugar, the former mayor of Indianapolis, and Daniels, a former corporate executive, than that of the brash Mourdock.
Polls indicate many voters were offended by Mourdock's slashing attacks on Lugar, even those who thought it was time for the 80-year-old senator to retire. In a statement, Lugar fed those doubts by saying Mourdock's hard-line approach is "not conducive to problem solving" and would be a ticket to failure as a lawmaker.
When the general election campaign revved up last month, a new Mourdock emerged with a milder message, bonding himself to Daniels and to well-known Republican surrogates such as Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn.
The transformation has left some Republicans shaking their heads.
"The night of the election he was singing the tea party's praises ? 'I couldn't have gotten elected without the tea party!' ? and then the clock turned midnight and he's a mainstream Republican," said Mike Murphy, an Indiana Republican strategist and former state representative.
Lugar supporter Anne Emison Wishard said Mourdock's change seems mostly cosmetic.
"I smell panic," said Wishard.
But Joe McKinney, a 59-year-old education professor at Ball State University who voted for Lugar, said the mainstream endorsements have made a favorable impression. They are "more moderate Republicans who seem interested in the issues I'm interested in," he said.
Donnelly says Mourdock's recent appearance at a tea party event in Texas with commentator Glenn Beck showed his true stripes and undercut his "ability to come back and talk to Hoosiers in the middle." Several prominent Lugar supporters have raised money or hosted meetings for Donnelly.
But Monica Boyer, co-founder of the tea party umbrella group Hoosiers for a Conservative Senate, said Mourdock's different messages don't worry her.
As for Donnelly, she said, "He could campaign with Mother Teresa and he would still have 'Obamacare' stamped on his forehead."

We are propelled through the fog of life by myriad mysterious forces, forever in search of some elusive cause.
Paul Thomas Anderson?s The Master attempts to navigate these unknowns in the only way we can: Through the narrative of the personal, the intimate and the physical experience of being.
It?s an inherently murky ? and often frustrating ? exercise, mostly because we often don?t know where we are until we?ve drawn the map of our own lives to see the outline of the larger terrain, where the roads and rivers travelled attain contextual meaning.
The Master churns through these waters with such a precise vision, we may be seduced by the intense clarity of the images ? recorded on pristine 70mm film stock ? but the meaning is by no means any less abstract.
This is one of those films that washes over you like so much water, leaving you drenched with impressions and the sensation of being wet, but without any fixed location of feeling.
Fittingly, the movie opens on a ship.
The first image shows us the chop of the slipstream in turquoise waters. A group of sailors are draped over the rigging of a gunship. This is the end of the war in the Pacific, and once-battle-bound fighters are suddenly adrift in a surreal sea of peace.
They have no purpose, and within moments, the idyllic image of men sleeping on white sand turns menacing as we meet our central character, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix), a man so hungry for meaning he looks emaciated.
Freddie empties the grain alcohol fuel from the torpedoes then mixes it with coconut milk. He then celebrates his poisonous high by molesting a sand castle shaped like a woman.
It?s a terrifying introduction to one of the creepiest characters to emerge in a leading role since Norman Bates did his shower routine, and Anderson does nothing to soothe our minds about Freddie as he follows this lost, black sheep back stateside.
Emotionally paralyzed and steeped in post-traumatic stress, Freddie finds it difficult to re-enter society. Every Rorschach blob looks like female genitalia, and every chemical in the darkroom proves drinkable to the distraught drifter.
For a brief interlude, he lands a job as a department store photographer ? and this is where Anderson proves his visual talents, and perhaps offers a glimpse of his own creative muse as Freddie tortures his victims in front of the lens.
These frames aren?t just stunning tributes to Anderson?s eye and his ability to assemble a production team capable of period perfection, they shoot straight to the subconscious and our collective sense of memory.
Somehow, these images of postwar youth photographed beneath hot floodlights resonate. They push us to conjure the framed pictures of our own family, collecting dust on some dresser or hanging on the wall of the basement stairs.
They click, and it?s important we?re seeing them through Freddie?s eyes, because from this point on, we?re experiencing the universe from Freddie?s fragmenting point of view.
Anderson sets him up as a voyeur, but in fact, we?re the gawkers, and we get a very good show.
Standing centre-frame is the terrifying and terrified Freddie Quell (Fred E. Qual, a sort of Wile E. Coyote constantly falling off cliffs), as well as his would-be saviour and latter-day Satan, Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman).
Together, these two have an almost Roadrunner-style relationship as Freddie chases the elusive ring of human meaning with dogged intensity, while Lancaster seems to offer the tender and juicy cure for Freddie?s spiritual hunger: Lancaster is the self-professed leader of ?The Cause,? a cultlike movement that aims to cure people of existential angst by explaining pain ? all pain ? as the remnant of past lives.
Freddie is seduced by Lancaster?s confidence and his close group of family and friends, but more than anything, Freddie is seduced by the mirror image of himself. Lancaster is another drifting soul with a menacing thirst for the bottle, but where Freddie is an outcast, Lancaster has enough gravitational mass to create his own atmosphere.
Freddie wants to breathe Lancaster?s air, and for the bulk of the running time, he sucks in the freshness like a coal miner hauling on a pipe to the surface. He grows dependent on the oxygen and the light-headed feeling, but every single frame offers a new slice of tension because both men are highly volatile.
One small spark and the whole movie turns into a fireball.
Anderson is so gifted at creating these internal gears and cogs, we?re never fully aware of the ticking time-bomb, but we can sense something is unwinding ? and that something could very well leave a crater.
It all makes for an off-kilter experience because we can never fully embrace any of the characters. Freddie remains a creepy man with curved shoulders and a concave chest, as though someone with a very large boot were standing on his torso. Lancaster, on the other hand, is a very large man with who seems entirely sympathetic ? even prophetic ? until he?s besotted by booze and sex.
The viewer has no stable terrain: We are on Anderson?s rocking ship for the duration, forced to watch the stunning scenery as it floats by like so many palm trees on a Pacific Isle, or so many dead bodies slowly rising from the deep.
A movie that forces full surrender in order to work its magic, The Master is not the kind of movie that panders with easy conclusions and lovable characters. It makes you work for some shred of escapist fantasy, then slowly but surely, rewards the slave in each one of us with a little bone of personal meaning.

It is safe to assume that everyone with a bike should have a set of bicycle tools that they keep with them all times. This set of tools will be able to help you in solving problems related to your bike. If possible, you need to carry the tool with you everywhere and every time you ride your bicycle. It eases you in fixing problems you have with your bike. There are some tools that must be present in your bicycle tool box. Without these tools, you will find it difficult to fix the bike yourself.
The first bicycle tools you must have are tubes. If you have a bike, it is suggested that you have at least two extra tubes with you. Tubes or tire valves can be found in almost every bike store around you. There are two types of tire valve owned by almost every bike that are released recently. Those tubes are called "Presta" and "Shrader". The former is a valve tire that comes from France. It is also called French valve. This valve is characterized as small and thin. The latter, on the other hand, is bigger than the former and looks a lot like a car tire valve.
The second tool is a lever for the tires. This tool is an important bicycle tool you should have. Lever is shaped like a beer bottle opener and is used to detach the tires from the wheels. Since it can break the tires, you have to be really careful in using it. If you go to bike stores, you will find that lever is sold in a set.
The third tool is a bicycle pump. This is an essential bicycle tool that people must have. The bike pump that you should have is the one that is attachable to your bike. People call this kind of pump as a frame pump. The characteristic of this pump is its light weight. This pump can come in handy during a sudden flat tire during a cycling activity. Using a pump requires practice and an inexperienced person can experience difficulty in doing so.
Other bicycle tools that are needed are a bicycle patch repair kit, which serves as a back up when there is a sudden flat tire; a "Presta" valve adapter that is used to repair a flat tire that your friend may have, which weighs less than the frame pump; and carbon dioxide cartridge inflation that you can use when you do not have times to fix a flat tire yourselves. These tools are really necessary helpful to your bike. So, if you have not had them with you, you should buy them right away.
Furthermore, there are also some regular maintenance bicycle tools. First tool that should be owned is cleaning liquid. This liquid is usually sold with soft cloths. You can use the soft cloths to help you apply the cleaning liquid on your bike. However, you have to be careful not to scratch the surface of your bike. The second maintenance tool is a screwdriver. You need to have, at least, two kinds of screwdriver for your bike, which are flat head and cross-head or Phillips screwdrivers. Next tool that needs to be possessed is a pair of pliers. It is better to have both short and long pliers. The following tool is a wire cutter that you usually can get together with the pliers. A small hammer is complimentary if you need to hit a part of the bike to get it back to its place. Other maintenance tools are plastic tire levers, which are used to peel off the bike tires; a torch to calibrate the disc brakes; a set of wrenches; brush, to clean the various parts of your bike; and a toothbrush for bike parts that are hard to reach with brush.

Most people know Scranton, Pennsylvania, as the fictional setting of NBC?s ?The Office.? Turns out the ?Electric City? is also the real life-setting of one of the most charming little spas in the state: LAVISH Body and Home (600 Lindsen St.; 570/558-2273), founded by Matt Drace (a former Creative Director at Travel + Leisure) and Jon Chernes, one-time marketing guru for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Given their impressive design resumes, it?s no surprise that their home goods section is well edited, but the spa itself is a huge draw. Clients love the organic facials?each one is tailored to your specific skin type and uses everything from cucumber to rice bran to draw out impurities?but personally, I love the soaps, made in Northern California of locally sourced herbs (my favorite: orange cinnamon with olive, which smells a bit like Florida at the holidays).

BALTIMORE (AP) ? After losing two straight games to Toronto, the Baltimore Orioles broke out the big bats.
The Orioles tied a team record by with seven home runs to rout the Blue Jays 12-2 and stay within 1? games of the AL East lead.
Chris Davis and Manny Machado each connected twice and the Orioles remained close to the division-leading New York Yankees, who won 8-2 in Minnesota.
Nate McLouth hit a leadoff shot in the first inning and Jim Thome and Mark Reynolds also homered. Baltimore has hit seven home runs three times, most recently on Aug. 26, 1985.
"Home runs are very unique, and when you do what we did tonight, it's something to be proud of. It's something that doesn't happen a whole lot in the game," Thome said.
Thome's home run was the 612th of his career and the first he's hit at home for the Orioles.
"Up and down the lineup, everyone swung the bat well. It's been fun," Thome said.
Davis finished with a career-high five RBIs to help the Orioles split a four-game series with the last-place Blue Jays.
"This was a tough series. It was one of those ones that you don't want to see at the end of the season coming in off a long road trip," Davis said.
"I think if you'd have told us a few months ago that we'd be a game-and-a-half out with six games left, I think you'd be pretty happy with that."
Beginning Friday, the Orioles have three games with Boston at home and three at Tampa Bay.
"We just got through playing Boston and we played them well. Obviously, the three in Tampa are going to be tough, but we're at a point where we still have a chance, so that's all you can ask for," Davis said.
The Orioles trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth before hitting three home runs.
Thome led off with his third homer since joining the Orioles. With two outs, Machado hit his fifth of the year for a 3-2 Baltimore lead. All of Machado's home runs have come at home, and his drive was the Orioles' 200th homer of the year.
Davis' three-run drive gave the Orioles a five-run inning and finished Carlos Villanueva (7-7).
Villanueva equaled a career high by giving up four home runs.
"Those mistakes I made, they hit them with authority. They put the power stroke on them and made me pay for them," Villanueva said.
Machado and Thome are the first AL teammates to hit home runs in the same inning with an age difference of more than 20 years, according to home run historian David Vincent.
Thome is 42 and Machado is 20 ? Thome's major league career began 10 months before Machado was born.
"That's crazy," Machado said. "It's a pretty good stat. I remember when I used to watch (Thome) play when I was a little kid. Now to hit a home run in the same inning he did, just feels great."
Davis hit his second home run in the seventh. On Aug. 24, he hit three home runs against the Blue Jays, also in a game started by Villanueva. He has 28 home runs.
Reynolds hit his 23rd homer in the sixth and Machado added a two-run shot in the eighth.
Miguel Gonzalez (8-4) allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. He allowed Edwin Encarnacion's 42nd home run with two outs in the top of the first.
With one out in the fifth, J.P. Arencibia, who went 7 for 9 in the four-game series, doubled and scored on Anthony Gose's single.
NOTES: Orioles LHP Randy Wolf was put on the 60-day disabled list with a torn ligament in his left elbow. Baltimore purchased the contract of INF-OF Bill Hall from Triple-A Norfolk. Hall will provide outfield help while Lew Ford is out with a groin injury. ... Deion Sanders, in town for Thursday's NFL Network game between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, took batting practice with the Orioles before the game. Sanders, who played nine years in the majors, was an outfielder for Baltimore manager Buck Showalter in the minors while in the Yankees' organization. ... The Orioles are off Thursday and begin a three-game series with Boston on Friday. Baltimore RHP Chris Tillman (8-2, 3.08 ERA) faces Red Sox RHP Aaron Cook (4-10, 5.13). ... On Thursday, Toronto hosts New York to begin a four-game series. Blue Jays RHP Brandon Morrow (8-7, 3.28) faces Yankees RHP Ivan Nova (12-7, 4.94).

The proposed Newhall Ranch residential development project received another setback this week when a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge issued a preliminary ruling that supported concerns raised by environmentalists.
Developers seek to eventually house about 60,000 residents along a six-mile stretch of the Santa Clara River. Environmentalists argue that the development would harm the waterway, destroy wildlife habitat and despoil Native American cultural sites.
The project has languished for years amid heavy opposition. In June, several environmental groups sued the California Department of Fish and Game for allegedly failing to adequately assess the potential environmental effects.
In the Superior Court's "statement of intended decision," filed Thursday, Judge Ann I. Jones found several of the plaintiffs' claims to be "without merit," such as Fish and Game's failure to work with all the Chumash tribal contacts identified by the Native American Heritage Commission. But the judge also backed alleged flaws in the environmental review. She called insufficient its analysis of the effect on wildlife, such as the rare San Fernando spineflower and steelhead salmon, which breed downstream.
The court also questioned the justification of the project, a stated "unmet demand for housing."
The ruling poses "significant obstacles" for Newhall Ranch developers, said John Buse, staff attorney for the Center for Biological Diversity, one of the plaintiffs. Others are the California Native Plant Society, Friends of the Santa Clara River, Santa Clarita Organization for Planning the Environment and the Wishtoyo Foundation and its Ventura Coastkeeper program.
"We feel there are a lot of deficiencies, a lack of adequate analysis of the environmental and cultural impacts and a lack of establishment of mitigation measures" in the review, said Jason Weiner, a staff attorney for Wishtoyo.
Mike Taugher, a spokesman for the Department of Fish and Game, said in an email that his agency was "still reviewing" the judge's preliminary decision and had no comment at this time.
Marlee Lauffer, a spokeswoman for Newhall Land, expressed disappointment.
"We believe that the decade-long environmental review process, which resulted in significant additional riparian land and spineflower preserves, was very thorough and detailed," Lauffer said in an email. "We are working with the Department of Fish and Game to fully assess the Court's initial ruling and to review all the legal options."
The plaintiffs said they are expecting a final ruling next month.

Commercial real estate is an easy market to break into, assuming you are savvy. Learn some basic information before attempting to buy property. Read this article to find out more about common tricks and mistakes you should avoid to become a successful investor.
Always remain calm and patient when dealing with the commercial real estate market. Do not invest into anything before thinking carefully. Going too fast could result in a loss that you could have seen coming had you stopped, researched, analyzed, evaluated, and cross-checked the potential with your desired goals. Be prepared to wait as much as a year for a suitable property to come available in your area.
Before you start out on your search for the perfect commercial property, you should be fully attuned to the specifics of your business needs. Make sure you have an idea of the type of office space that you want to work in. If you want to grow your company, buy a larger space than you think you need. This can save money later.
TIP! See to it that the price that you ask for in real estate is realistic. Many different factors can influence the real worth of your property.
If you are writing a letter of intent, take it easy. Go for agreements on the bigger problems at first, then get to the smaller issues later in the negotiations. You can make all your negotiations less tense, so you can agree on any of the smaller issues first.
You should consult with a tax expert prior to purchasing anything. Not only can your tax adviser help you determine the total cost of your potential investment, but he can provide you information about the taxes on your investment and advise you about deductions you may be entitled to. By taking your adviser?s advice, you may be able to find a location where the taxes are less.
TIP! Find out how the firm that you are thinking of working with measure results. Ask how the space needed is determined as well as the criteria they look for and their negotiation methods.
Look around at the general environment around the building. It?s up to you to clean up any damage or environmental waste associated with your property. Do you want to buy property in a area that is prone to flooding? That may not be the wisest choice. Certain agencies are available in most areas that will provide substantial information regarding the local environment, its conditions, weather patterns, and any concerns you should have as a real estate owner.
When considering an investment, one should consider the possible consequences of economic inflation within the next decade. Investors in the past were protected by a clause that was built into any agreement that adjusted for inflation using Consumer Price Index comparisons. Today, this practice is all but extinct, leaving you more vulnerable to losses caused by inflation.
Commercial transactions are more complex, involved, and time-consuming than actually buying a home. Understand, however, that the intensity and duration of the process is necessary to achieve the higher return on your investment.
TIP! If you desire commercial property for rental purposes, locate buildings that are simply yet solidly constructed. A well-built building will attract tenants quickly because tenants want a property that is solid.
Be aware that with a freshly written lease, tactics and rent considerations will be crucial to your investment?s future. You need to calculate how much income you need to allocate to your bills, and then how much profit you?ll want on top of that, before you start the search for a tenant. This will give you a foundation for meeting the goals that you set for yourself and your investment.
You need plenty of info before you begin your commercial real estate adventure. Hopefully this article has provided you with some of the information you will need in order to become a successful, global commercial real estate
TIP! When you are buying commercial real estate, find some opportunities that will let you buy a bigger building. Managing a slightly larger unit does really take that much more work, and doing so actually increases your profit on a per unit basis.

He brings with him a wealth of experience from over ten years working in electrical wholesale and within just a few days of starting has already drawn up a 'strategic roadmap' of where he believes Trading Depot should be focussing it's energy.
This plan of action includes numerous changes and improvements to the Electrical Supplies section of the site: some minor, some more dramatic but all of which will improve both the usability and navigation for our visitors,? as well as raise our profile in the search engines.
Since launch in 2008 Trading Depot has established it's name as a major online player in a number of the home renovation and DIY sectors including most notably plumbing supplies, bathroom suites, and showers. The Electrical product range has seen some tremendous success too over the past few years with returning customers valuing the fast service and low prices on offer across a range of products including armoured cable, switches and sockets, consumer units, extractor fans, conduit, trunking and more.
?There is always room for improvement however and this is where Alistair comes in. Talking enthusiastically about his plans he comments:
"There are a number of exciting new product ranges that we plan to add shortly, along with a certain amount of reorganisation that I feel would benefit Trading Depot's customers."
"I am convinced that there is no reason why Trading Depot should not become as well known as an electrical wholesaler as it is as an online plumbers merchant."
"I believe that the Electrical side of the website has amazing potential and having someone with Alistair's experience on board means we can really make the most of this."Work is underway on a number of sections including the ever popular MK Logic Plus switches and sockets section and the product ranges which make up the Decorative Switches and Sockets section that includes products from manufacturers such as Hamilton.
At this time of year though as the weather gets colder and the evenings get darker it is products such as the Dimplex electric heaters, outdoor lighting, and security products like burglar alarms and CCTV cameras that become particularly popular.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The ex-wife of former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt wants to set aside the couple's divorce settlement, claiming he vastly understated the value of a team that sold earlier this year for $2 billion, the highest figure ever paid for a pro sports franchise.
Jamie McCourt's attorney, Bertram Fields, told The Associated Press that she "thought very long and very hard about whether to file this motion" but that after other means failed, she returned to court.
"Mr. McCourt got about 93 percent of the family assets, and Mrs. McCourt got about 7 percent," Fields said in a phone interview late Tuesday. "We would've much preferred to have this massive imbalance resolved with some modification, but we got no response to that approach. We didn't want to have more family litigation, but now it's up to the court."
The motion filed Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court claims Frank McCourt committed fraud by misrepresenting the couple's Dodgers assets as worth less than $300 million during their protracted divorce.
The pair's marriage was dissolved in October 2010, and Jamie McCourt received $131 million. The new court papers claim that after the sale and subtraction of relevant debts, Frank McCourt's assets turned out to be worth $1.7 billion, well over 10 times the amount Jamie McCourt received.
The motion claimed that even if Frank McCourt's figures were the result of mistakes rather than fraud, the settlement should be tossed out on the basis of the errors.
An email seeking comment from Ryan Kirkpatrick, an attorney for Frank McCourt, was not immediately returned late Tuesday.
The Dodgers went into bankruptcy protection in June 2011, but Frank McCourt eventually sold the team for $2 billion this May to a group that included former Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson.
The group has vowed to restore dignity to the storied franchise after the era of McCourt, who is widely reviled by Dodgers fans for his seemingly profligate lifestyle at the club's expense after he bought the team from Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. for $430 million in 2004.
In bankruptcy filings, attorneys for Major League Baseball said Frank McCourt looted more than $180 million in revenue from the club for personal use and other business unrelated to the team.
Divorce documents laid out the couple's expensive tastes, including the purchase of several homes, trips on chartered jets, country club memberships and even a six-figure, on-call hair stylist.
A hearing on the motion to set aside the divorce settlement was scheduled for Nov. 16.

?Going Dutch? is becoming more and more popular, not only with your closest?friends?but also with your partner. While it?s still typical for your man to pay for your date-night bill, it?s equally common for?couples?to split the bill. Of course, for a special occasion, such as your partner?s birthday or an announcement of a job promotion, it?s nice to cover the entire bill as a surprise to your?significant other. But other times, you may want to go halfsies to show them that you can still pull your own weight. Still, there are both pros and cons for splitting the bill on a?date.

Pros:
1. It keeps things fair and balanced.?It?s nice to feel like you?re contributing to your?relationship: emotionally, financially or otherwise. If you want to split the bill on your next date, approach your partner about it. They?re sure to appreciate your effort. There are even apps like Tip Calculator Free to make the math easy for you.
2. It shows your independence.?This is especially important for women, who still sometimes suffer from the old-fashioned notion that their boyfriends?are expected to pay for every meal. Modern women are proud of their financial freedom. In fact, some?women?make more money than their significant others. One way to show your success to your date is by footing your half of the bill.
3. It?s just a nice thing to do.? If you?re in your twenties or thirties and going out on a first date with a?new guy, he?s probably paid for his fair share of dates already. Offering to split the bill will defy his expectations, which could make him like you even more.
Cons:
1. It may signal a financial problem for your partner.?What if your man is asking you to split the bill because he can?t afford to pay for it? ?It?s never good to assume anything, but if you notice that he wants you to cover your half of the bill?every?time, he may be hiding something from you.

2. It makes the date more platonic.?If a guy asks you on a?date, chances are, he?ll take care of the bill, especially if he plans to ask you out again. However, if he offers to split it with you, he may be more interested in just being?friends. Either way, it?s important to make sure that you two are on the same page, so this can help you make that judgment.
3. It takes away the ?treat? aspect of the date.?When you split the bill, it?s kind of like taking yourself to dinner rather than going out for a?special evening?with your significant other. Sure, it?s perfectly fine to go halfsies for a random pizza lunch on Wednesday afternoon, but don?t let that habit carry over into Saturday night?s?fine dining.

The long-awaited roll-out appears to have commenced, with lucky GS III owners in Poland being among the first to get an early official taste of Android 4.1.1. If you hadn't heard, the update will bring a host of subtle yet powerful improvements, including Google Now for anticipating search queries, smooth UI improvements from Project Butter, as well as some Samsung extras already seen on the Galaxy Note II, such as a resizable Pop-up play screen. Hopefully this means the update will soon be sent on its merry way to GS IIIs in other parts of the Old World, and maybe at some point -- dare we suggest it -- those in the US too.

Watch a video of the machine Makani Power has designed to capture wind power in flight
By David Biello

Some 300 meters up in the air, enough wind blows to provide 400 terrawatts of power, according to a recent analysis?or more than 20 times more power than the world as a whole presently uses. But getting up that high is challenging; a traditional wind turbine would be too tall. So Makani Power and others are designing alternatives.
Here the California-based company's prototype Wing 7 shows how it could fly guided solely by computer and use its specially-designed rotors both for thrust and to extract power from the wind.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) ? The love letters, school papers and dramatic works of college-age Joseph Goebbels reveal a romantic young man beginning to show signs of anti-Semitism and egotistical and controlling behavior, according to a Connecticut auction house selling the pre-war writings of Adolf Hitler's propaganda chief.
Alexander Historical Auctions plans to sell the collection on Sept. 27 in Stamford, saying it may prove invaluable in providing historical and psychological insights.
"It sums up the formative years of the number two man in the Third Reich, who was responsible for motivating the masses in Germany to back Hitler," said Bill Panagopulos, the company's president. "In my opinion, it shows how this rather simple, shy and love-struck college student really just became radicalized."
The thousands of pages include Goebbels' college dissertation, report cards, dozens of poems, school essays and letters from family members, friends and girlfriends.
"You really get a feel for what's going on in his head," Panagopulos said. "There's a lot of information if somebody wants to dig into the mind of this man who grew into a lunatic."
In an early sign of his ego, Goebbels would sign some of his materials with numerous signatures. Toward the later years of the collection, Goebbels is starting to show anti-Semitic tendencies, Panagopulos said. He added that the auction house has only translated about 10 percent of the papers and has had a tough time with Goebbels' handwriting.
The sale sparked concerns by a leader of a Holocaust survivors group who criticized the auction house's sale last year of the journals written by Nazi death camp doctor Josef Mengele.
"Alexander Auction House is making a business out of selling Nazi artifacts and memorabilia," said Menachem Rosensaft, vice president of the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants. "They clearly have the legal right to profit here from such materials. I leave it to others to determine the morality of it all."
Rosensaft said such materials belong in an archive for historians to study. He expressed concerns that at an auction, the materials could wind up in the wrong hands and be used as a shrine to the Nazi leader.
Panagopulos said museums often depend on donations made by people buying items at auction. He said neo-Nazis don't collect the material.
Addressing another concern of Rosensaft's, that there is a cottage industry of creating fake Nazi memorabilia, Panagopulos said most of the Goebbels documents up for sale have been available to experts, scholars and researchers for years and no one has questioned their authenticity. He called their provenance "ironclad."
He said his own morals should not be questioned, noting that his father's hometown in Greece was largely wiped out in an act of German retribution.
The collection, which spans the period up to shortly before he joined the Nazi party in 1924, is expected to sell for more than $200,000, Panagopulos said. It includes more than 100 letters written between Goebbels and Anka Stalherm, the first great love of his life, and show his desire to control others, he said. Letters from other girlfriends include a pair of sisters he seduced at the same time.
In a letter to his teacher after his sister died, he thanks his teacher for condolences but adds that his loss is minor compared to losses suffered by "our fatherland."
Goebbels and his wife killed their six children with cyanide before killing themselves the day after Hitler's suicide.
Panagopulos said the sale is on behalf of a Swiss company and would not benefit any relatives of Goebbels, but he said his auction house does not identify consignors. He said the company received the materials from a man who obtained them from an earlier owner who won the rights to the writings in a 1950s court case with Goebbels' sister.
The auction house last year said it sold the journals written by Mengele, drawing criticism from Rosensaft who said the business was profiting off the sale of materials by one of the worst mass murderers in history. Alexander officials said the Jewish buyer wanted to remain anonymous and is building a collection for a museum.
Panagopulos said at the time his profit would be $15,000 to $20,000 and that he would make a donation to a war memorial. He said Mengele's journals have historical value and that many auction houses deal with Nazi-related items and the buyers are reputable.

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers
Steven Levy at Wired has a great interview with Mary Meeker, the Wall Street Internet analyst turned Kleiner Perkins venture capitalist.Meeker was one of the first people to spot the rise of tech companies in the mid-nineties, and her annual presentations on the state of the technology are must reads.
One of the most interesting parts of the interview is where Meeker talks about how Silicon Valley has helped or hurt people during the recession:
Wired: Life is good for entrepreneurs, but what has Silicon Valley done for the rest of the country?
Meeker: I think people?s lives are better because they have access to all this information at a very low cost. Entertainment is cheaper, it?s easy to get help, it?s easier to stay out of trouble. I believe that technology has made what has been a very difficult time less bad.
And there?s a second part. Silicon Valley is different than it has been in the past. Compare the Oracle team in the 1980s?very sales-driven?with the Facebook management team, for whom changing the world is more important than selling ads. There?s a different ethos and a different mindset, A lot of really talented recent college grads have been humbled. They?ve seen stuff happen to their parents or their older brother or their family in a difficult economic time. They don?t feel entitled, and they feel that they need to make their own way. These kids are creating some unbelievable stuff.

Russia's Dmitri?Medvedev called for the release of three Pussy Riot members sentenced to two years in prison. Is he trying to distance himself from the decreasingly popular president?
By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / September 13, 2012
EnlargeDmitri Medvedev, Russia's prime minister and former president, has departed from the official script ? as he sometimes dramatically does ? to call for the release of three Pussy Riot women who were sentenced last month to two years in a penal colony for committing sacrilege in Moscow's premier Orthodox cathedral.

The women have been in prison since March, and their appeal hearing is set to begin in two weeks. Mr. Medvedev called for the women to be given suspended sentences.
"Imprisonment is a very severe, even frightening responsibility," Medvedev told a meeting of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, of which he is nominal leader.
"This well-known group of girls have been in prison quite a long time already, and that is a very serious punishment for everything they did, regardless of the sentence?. Prolonging their prison confinement seems unproductive in this case," he added.
Medvedev's comments came just a few days after President Vladimir Putin compared Pussy Riot performances with "witches' sabbaths" and mused over how obscene their name sounds in English in an interview with the Kremlin-run RT network. Otherwise, Mr. Putin insisted he had nothing to do with the case.
On Tuesday Russian state TV aired a "documentary" film entitled "Provocateurs. Part 2" which claimed the brief "punk prayer" performed by Pussy Riot in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior last February was part of an international conspiracy financed by renegade Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who currently lives in London.
Some experts say Medvedev, who has not shone in his new role as prime minister, may be trying to refurbish his liberal credentials amid Russia's fast polarizing political landscape in hopes that he may have a political future if Putin should be forced to leave the Kremlin early.
"Medvedev can't change anything for Pussy Riot, but he's taking care to position himself as a liberal," says Alexei Mukhin, director of the independent Center for Political Information in Moscow.
"After all, he's a former president, head of the United Russia party, and if Putin were to go away he could step up. He's taking care with his biography, to show that he can take a stand."
